Internship Program (Fall Semester - August 2013 - December 2013) - Canton Charge (Canton, OH)

Requirements:

  • Internships are only offered to college students receiving academic credit for the internship (no exceptions). If chosen for an internship, prior to reporting, you must submit proof that you will receive credit for the internship.
  • The majority of departments require that a student have a major in a related academic area (i.e. Basketball Communications seeks students with majors in Sports Management and/or Communications). While younger students may apply, upper classmen and students in Masters’ programs are preferred candidates because of their advanced education and training.
  • Interns should possess strong oral and written communication skills. Solid computer skills are a necessary requirement given the nature of the modern business office (experience with Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc., which are used company-wide, have proven especially helpful to students).
  • Internships are unpaid. While some of our internships allow students time outside of normal business hours to work part-time elsewhere, the majority require a full-time commitment during office hours, as well as availability during games and/or events.

CANTON D-LEAGUE MARKETING & GAME PRESENTATION
INTERN DESCRIPTION

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the department’s team leaders, will observe the operations and learn the functions of the Marketing & Game Presentation team, specifically, and Canton Charge, generally, by assisting with various projects. The Marketing & Game Presentation Intern will assist in the developing and implementation of a variety of activation initiatives for the Canton Charge. The position will assist in all facets of the interactive game concourse and in arena activities while providing support for other marketing initiatives and unique projects as assigned.

Must commit 20-30 hours per week.

Experience gained in the following areas:
• Setup and tear down of the Canton Charge game-day interactive concourse and game presentation items.
• Assist in supervising the C-Squad who facilitates all activities, including promotions and in-game contests.
• Compile industry best practices, research new marketing ideas and assist in department brainstorms to help raise the Charge Game Presentation and Marketing to a higher level.
• Create game-presentation game plans to inform building crew of department needs and locations of promotions and events.
• Assist in the logistics, setup and execution of the Charge Caravan events occurring prior to the start of the regular season and integrated throughout season of play.
• Assist in Canton Charge Text Campaign, compiling statistics and game notes for mass Charge Fan Alerts received via telephone.
• Monitor and log all concourse and autograph supplies.
• Matrix asset reviews – update each asset with impressions based on ratings and attendance for broadcast and In Arena messaging.
• Update online events calendars with all Charge related activities.
• Monthly review of media impressions.
• Proof production copy.
• Fulfillment of additional projects as assigned by the Charge Marketing Manager.

Qualifications:

• College student with study emphasis in Sports Management and/or Marketing or related field. Student must receive college credit for the internship.

CANTON D-LEAGUE SALES AND MARKETING
INTERN DESCRIPTION


Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the department’s team leaders, will observe and learn the functions of the Charge Sales and Marketing Teams by participating in various team activities, events and day-to-day operations.


Experience gained in the following areas:

Administrative function:
Assist with all departmental activities including: Coordination of season ticket holder mailings, creation of sales collateral, assist in managing invites and RSVPs for all special events, and assist in supervising C-Squad entertainment team.

Special event coordination:
Assist in the coordination/implementation of special events, based on current need. Events may include Season Ticket Holder Events, Seat Relocation Day, Open Houses, Charge Caravan, etc.

Hands-on Sales experience as it relates to game day responsibilities:
Assist in game day activities, which include: helping with pre and post-game group programs, and assisting customers with sales and service related questions during the game.

Corporate Partnership Support:
Assist Partnership team with various team functions including but not limited to creation of partner profiles, contact lists, monthly updates, client and prospect meeting preparation.

Marketing coordination:
Assist Marketing team leader with activities including: game-presentation promotions and events, Charge Text Campaigns, Matrix asset review, updating online events calendar, monthly review of media impressions, etc.

Qualifications:

• College student with study emphasis in Sports Management and/or Marketing or related field. Student must receive college credit for the internship.

INTERN DESCRIPTION

Primary Overview of Internship:
Under the guidance of the Communications Manager, will observe the operations and learn the functions of the Basketball Communications Team and the team’s front office, specifically, and the Canton Charge, generally, by assisting with various projects.

Experience gained in the following areas:

Internal research techniques and the role of print media:
Help distribute newspaper clips on the Charge and archive the stories to chronicle the team’s history.

Internal operations of the team’s front office and how to handle media requests:
Assist in the operations of the Basketball Communications Team, including answering phone calls from the media. Once acclimated to their role, students are able to address the majority of inquiries received or the routing of inquiries and learn the internal operations of the team’s front office.

Broadcast and print media journalism:
Assist the department in updating records and writing and editing various documents, such as press releases and biographies on players and prospects.

Hands-on Basketball Communications and game-day responsibilities:
• Participate in game-day activities including setting up the media work areas, delivering game notes to out-of-town media, distributing scores of out-of-town games to the media, conducting post-game interviews of players and coaches and transcribing quotes and distributing them to the press.
• Distributing the necessary credentials to media personnel on game days.

Community Relations:
Assist the Canton Charge front office activate D-League and team specific community outreach programs.

Web Operations:
• Social Media- Monitor and update our social media platforms with relevant Canton Charge/Cleveland Cavaliers team information.
• Web Site- Assist Communications Manager with the update and creation of basic pages on CantonCharge.com when necessary.

Qualifications:

CANTON D-LEAGUE BASKETBALL OPERATIONS
INTERN DESCRIPTION

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the department’s team leaders, will observe the operations and learn the functions of the Basketball Operations Team (Coaches & Front Office) specifically, and Canton Charge, generally, by assisting with various projects.

This is a yearlong internship (August – April) and school credit must be available for both semesters.

Experience gained in the following areas:

Internal Operations of Basketball Operations:
Assist in all aspects within Basketball Operations reporting to the General Manager, Head Coach & Director of Basketball Operations. Duties will include but are not limited to: gathering player background information, preparation for practice & games, assist on court during practice, organizing and filing all league communications, assisting in all player transactions, and assist with all team video needs.

Organization & Execution of D-League Draft:
Assist in the complete execution & organization of the D-League draft, including but not limited to: gathering player background, video scouting, organizing database of player information, organizing draft day set up, organizing player transportation, etc.

Assisting Visiting Team:
Act as the liaison to the visiting teams while they are in market, specifically assisting their coaches, front office and players with organizing transportation, shoot-around, practice and game preparation.

Hands-on Basketball Operations Game-Day Responsibilities:
Participate in game-day activities including setting up the arena/locker rooms for shoot-around, pregame & postgame. Live logging of team video on editing computer; coordinating stats for coaches, available to communicate with NBA D-League Office & team’s General Manager during games.

Qualifications:

• College student with study emphasis in Sports Management and/or a desire for a career in basketball coaching or team management. Student must receive college credit for the internship.
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Computer literacy is required; experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) is preferred. Experience in related activities at the college level is preferred.
• Must be organized and enjoy detail. Must be flexible, able to accept direction and constructive criticism, as necessary, and to absorb and work on multiple projects.

INTERN DESCRIPTION

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the department’s team leaders, will observe the operations and learn the functions of the Corporate Communications Team, specifically, and Cavaliers Holdings, generally, by assisting with a variety of public relations and organizational communications responsibilities.

Experience gained in the following areas:

Assist with creating and implementing publicity plans for Quicken Loans Arena events, which includes writing promotional copy for theQArena.com and email blasts, social media interaction (Facebook and Twitter), coordinating performer media interviews and appearances, and setting up publicity events for the promotion of shows.

Assist in developing and executing creative communication strategies via traditional and social media to bring awareness to Cavaliers marketing promotions and activities, in addition to ticket sales initiatives.

Prepare media summaries. Track, print and electronic media coverage to measure success of PR/communications campaigns as follow up for show promoters, Cavaliers corporate partners and other organizational communications initiatives. Also includes media tracking of news coverage that is noteworthy to Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena‘s organizational initiatives.

Respond to fan and guest emails to address complaints and general informational inquiries. (In addition to being a very important public relations function, this is a great opportunity to learn about guest services and facility operations; policies and procedures.)

Be responsible for taking game and event photography; assemble web galleries and archive photos for future use.

General media relations and other duties as assigned such as writing press releases and advisories; coordinating media drops; updating media list; media credentialing for events; research and special project assignments.


Qualifications:

• College junior/senior with study emphasis in Public Relations, Communications or Journalism preferred. Student must receive college credit for the internship.

Primary Overview of Internship:

The Digital Team Intern will get a close look at how a digital team operates at a professional sports team and an entertainment facility. This experience includes hands-on experience with updating the various web sites and engaging with fans on our social media platforms.

Experience gained in the following areas:

Moderating and Updating Cavaliers Social Media Sites:
Monitors, updates and participates in team’s social network sites including (but not limited to) CavFanatic, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Creating and Updating Pages on Main Web Sites:
Assists in the creation and updating of basic web pages on Cavs.com, LakeErieMonsters.com, TheQArena.com, CavaliersTeamShop.com, etc.

Content Creation on Main Web Sites:
Assists in the development and creation of content pieces on Cavs.com, LakeErieMonsters.com, TheQArena.com, CavaliersTeamShop.com, etc.

Graphic Editing
Helps edit, resize and publish web graphics, including game and event photo galleries.


Qualifications:

• College student with study emphasis in Sports Management, Web Design or other computer related degree. Student must receive academic credit for the internship

• Must have excellent computer skills, including knowledge of basic HTML and Adobe Photoshop. Should also be very familiar with social media sites and newest technology on the web. Experience in video editing is a plus.

Examples of special projects/duties include: market research and distribution, game day activities and promotions, Cavaliers Caravan appearances, FanFest, NBA Draft Day parties, special team appearances and seasonal giveaways.

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the department’s team leaders, will observe the operations and learn the functions of the Corporate Partnerships Team, specifically, and Cavaliers Holdings, generally, by assisting with various projects.


Experience gained in the following areas:

General
• Assisting with day-to-day activities relating to servicing and fulfillment of partner accounts, ensuring 100% delivery of contractual obligations
• Update and distribute as directed on a bi-weekly basis the following reports: partner contracts and account summaries, partner promotions update report, department calendar, etc.
• Make all necessary deliveries and fulfill any internal or external requests in a timely manner

New Business Generation
• Help create unique activation programs to increase revenue from existing partners and future ones
• Maintain awareness of sponsorship/market trends and knowledge relative to what Cleveland Cavaliers corporate partners and their like competitors are executing in other markets and/or professional leagues
• Research and conceive promotional ideas, monitor what types of events and promotions other sports properties are employing, and relay information to the Corporate Partnerships Team

Under the guidance of the department’s team leaders, will observe and learn the functions of the Cavaliers Ticket Sales and Service Team by participating in various team activities, events and day-to-day operations.


Experience gained in the following areas:

Experience gained in the following areas:

CRM/Data Philosophy:
Learn the importance of maintaining a culture of using data to help drive decision-making, segment customers to aid in relevant and targeted marketing, and utilizing our technology systems to develop new, more efficient processes.

Data Sets/Structure:
Learn about our overall data structure, and the ultimate goal of having a 360 degree view of our fans.

CRM – Ticketing/Corporate Sales:
Assist in the daily maintenance of the CRM’s Ticketing Module. Help manage structural team changes, lead distribution, and analysis via CRM reporting tools.
Assist in the daily maintenance of the CRM’s Sponsorship Module. Help maintain deal sheets, monitor sales activity, and develop knowledge of reporting tools.

Email Marketing/Demand Generation:
Develop general knowledge of demand generation and email marketing and learn the importance of customer segmentation and relevant marketing. This includes assisting in list management, segmentation, internal email process, and developing automated marketing campaigns.

Monitor Trends and Industry Best Practices:
Read and learn about industry best practices that could potentially be applicable to our business, and use this knowledge to provide recommendations and help implement strategies.

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the Director of Corporate Sourcing, the Corporate Sourcing & Admin Services intern will observe the processes for reviewing and evaluating all invoices and purchases, using in-house electronic purchase order system. The Corporate Sourcing & Admin Services intern will also learn how to evaluate orders, analyze options, consolidate purchases, and communicate with vendors and internal customers to assure the best solution for the need.

Experience gained in the following areas:

• Cataloging, organizing and filing vendor information

• Reviewing, printing, scanning and archiving purchase orders and backup information

• Researching new vendor information

• Scheduling of vendor appointments

• Create spreadsheets for blanket purchase orders

• Create filing system and file folders for new vendors

• Be willing to learn and provide ideas on how to improve the Sourcing process for the Cavaliers organization

• Compose monthly and weekly Sourcing reports

FINANCE
INTERN DESCRIPTION

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the leadership of the Director of Finance and Assistant Controller, the Finance intern should be a versatile self-starter, highly motivated and eager to learn. The internship experiences will range from opportunities that build finance, accounting, financial analysis and strategic thinking skills. INTERN DESCRIPTION

Primary Overview of Internship:

Under the guidance of the Vice President of Facility Operations the intern will observe the operations and learn the functions of the Facility Operations Team, specifically, and Cavaliers Holdings, generally, by assisting with various projects.


Experience gained in the following areas:

Event Coordination/Event Planning:
Assist with event planning and coordination, including meetings, rehearsals, concert load-in/load out, concerts, basketball/hockey games, changeovers and other special services, and support for Quicken Loans Arena events. Once acclimated, help coordinate events, including event opening and closing activities, assisting event personnel with various functions and troubleshooting/problem-solving during events as required.

Facility Operations:
Assist with administrative functions of the Facility Operations Team, including budgeting, cost control, equipment inventory, preventive maintenance, record controls, safety reports, event follow-up, and payroll functions.

Technical Services:
Assist with administrative and daily technical support functions of the department, including parking, sound systems, lighting, heating, cooling, staging, video presentation, and ventilation.

Interns also assist with any special project(s) related to Quicken Loans Arena and its event planning which are assigned to the department. Examples have included energy management reviews, structural steel comparisons, concert staffing, emergency evacuation planning, fire safety programs, handicap accessibility reviews, computerized equipment controls analysis, and technical manual review and analysis.

Qualifications:

• College student with study emphasis in Sports Management and/or Facility Management or related field. Student must receive college credit for the internship.

Primary Overview of Internship:

The IT Intern will get a close look at how an IT person operates at a professional sports team and entertainment facility. This experience includes hands-on IT problem solving within a fast paced environment.

Experience gained in the following areas:

Help Desk Support:

Will be involved in all aspects of user support. This will include solving user problems remotely, on the phone or in person. Troubleshooting will also include user questions, requests, hardware problems and follow-up.

Hardware implementation:

Will be involved in roll-out of replacement PC’s, monitors, printers etc.
 

IT Inventory:

Will assist in maintaining IT inventory and parts ordering. This will include obtaining quotes, purchase order processing, putting stock away.

Qualifications:

• College student with study emphasis in Computer Science, Network Design or other computer related degree. Student must receive academic credit for the internship.

• Must have excellent computer skills, including knowledge of computer and network troubleshooting. Should also be very familiar with Microsoft Office programs. Familiarity with a MAC environment is a plus.

• Must be organized and enjoy internal customer interaction with high people skills. Must be flexible, able to accept direction and constructive criticism, as necessary, and to absorb and work on multiple projects.

GAME PRESENTATION (QTV)
INTERN DESCRIPTION

The QTV Production Team is looking for a highly motivated, creative individual to intern for the Broadcast/Game Entertainment Video Department for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Lake Erie Monsters, Cleveland Gladiators and Quicken Loans Arena. This individual will assist on all aspects in the grand spectrum of sports production; In-Arena, Broadcast and Web Projects.

Responsibilities would include:

• Fulfilling various request for copies of video both digitally and on tape.
• Keeping work areas stocked with both pertinent video and office supplies.
• Keeping work areas neat and orderly.
• Assuming the duties as production assistant on various shoots.
• Producing quality graphics for use in-game, web, broadcast, duplication requests and/or misc.
• Shooting and producing for use in-game, web and broadcast and/or misc.
• Game night duties (could be used in any and all aspects of a live event)
• Editing a product for use in-game, web, broadcast and/or misc.

This internship will involve all levels of production and will vary day to day. The more professionalism, the better the work ethic and willingness to learn, will determine how much responsibility they will be allowed to assume.

We are looking for the best possible intern not only to contribute to the organization but also to take away for themselves a vast amount of knowledge we can provide them.

In the end the attitude of one is the most important characteristic for our candidate. There will be plenty of on the job training, through shoots, projects and dealings with clients. The hours will be random and long at times, but the opportunity is a fantastic one for the kind of individual that has a passion to be in this field or the field of production/post production.

Under the guidance of the Director of Communications and the Digital Content Coordinator, the Communications Intern will observe and assist with the public relations, media relations, operational, web and social media efforts of the Lake Erie Monsters front office.

Experience gained in the following areas:

Working with media:
Will assist with TV, radio and print media outlets, attend player/coach appearances and interviews, coordinate media credential process and more.

Web and social media content and operations:
Learn and assist with the day-to-day operations and upkeep of the team’s website and various social media platforms. This may include posting stories, creating photo galleries, working on videos, creating and editing images and updating content management system.

Game day responsibilities:
Participate in game-day activities including setting up the media work areas, doing rosters and game notes, delivering game notes and stats, conducting postgame interviews of players and coaches, setting up press dining and updating website and social media sites after game.

Inner workings of the Communications area of a sports team:
The Communications Intern is a vital part of the Communications Team. He/she will be relied on in the same manner full time staff members are. The intern will also be able to take ownership of projects and will have many of their own responsibilities that help with the running of the Team as a whole.


Qualifications:

  • College student with study emphasis in Sports Management/Public Relations/Communications/Marketing/Digital/Web or related field. Student must receive college credit for the internship.

Special event coordination:
Assist in the coordination/implementation of special events, based on current need. Events may include halftime receptions, Picnic on The Plaza, Seat Relocation Day, etc.

Hands-on Sales experience as it relates to game day responsibilities:
Assist in game day activities, which include: helping with pre-game programs, answering sales and service related questions during the game, distribution of game programs to all VIP seats before the game and hanging and removing all corporate box signs before and after the game, respectively.
